Is maintaining a healthy water level making you stay healthier and younger?

What do you see first thing when you see someone? How do you recognise people’s ages?

Figuring out someone’s age can be interesting. Usually, you might look at their eyes for wrinkles or lines. Then, you check their posture and how they dress to get an idea of their age. Keep in mind, though, that these clues might not always be exact and can differ for each person.

Lately, I’ve realized that my body isn’t handling water retention like it used to. When I have salty or spicy foods for dinner, I wake up with puffy eyes and a tired look the next day. This has led to mild puffiness and bags under my eyes. These symptoms come and go, causing wrinkles under my eyes that make me appear older.

Water weight, which refers to the extra water your body retains and can vary by up to 2kg, can lead to bloating and puffiness in various areas like your face, abdomen, legs, and arms.

It’s a component of your overall body weight.

Do you think there is a correlation between being younger-looking and regulating your body's water balance?

Yes, there is a correlation between looking younger and maintaining a balanced water level in your body. Proper hydration and managing water retention can contribute to a more youthful appearance.

How to maintain a balanced water level in your body?

1. Moderate exercise regularly

: Keep your training at a moderate level which is the critical factor. It would be best if you found what your moderate level is. The research found that exercising at a moderate intensity more times per week may be more beneficial for water balancing.

This moderate exercise will help to improve blood circulation and enhance digestion to alleviate the discomfort of water retention and release excess water from your body.

*Examples of moderate-intensity exercise: Your heart rate is

up to 50% – 60% higher than its rate when you are at rest, such

as fast walking, dancing, yoga, swimming or cycling.

2. Sleep well

: Study shows that your body works when you are asleep and flushes out all your impurities. Sleeping affects your kidneys’ sympathetic renal nerves, which regulate body sodium levels. This will help in reducing water retention.

3. Manage salt intake

Your body will retain approximately 1.5 litres of fluid when you take too much salt and continue to consume.

: Limit your sodium intake and try not to eat processed food containing lots of sodium. Your body will retain approximately 1.5 litres of fluid when you take too much salt and continue to consume.

4. Intake of Potassium and magnesium

: It regulates water balance and helps remove extra sodium from your body, causing water retention and resulting in bags and puffiness under your eyes.

The foods are rich in potassium and magnesium.

  • Banana

  • Avocado

  • Tomatoes

  • Sweet potatoes

  • Leafy vegetables such as spinach

5. Drink more water

: Being well-hydrated can reduce water retention.

Your body is always trying to maintain a  balanced water level. You will get water retention to restore water in your body if your body is dehydrated constantly.

6. Take enough protein and reduce carbohydrates

: A protein such as an albumin, which your liver produces, keeps the fluid in the bloodstream and prevents water retention.

7. Try not to eat or drink late at night.

Nutrients and moisture are absorbed by the digestive system and do not excrete smoothly through your kidneys when you eat or drink late at night. The extra water from your watery blood, which couldn’t eliminate efficiently, is pushed out of the blood vessels, causing water retention in your body.

It’s not always possible to turn back time, but by maintaining a healthy lifestyle, you can enhance your overall health and achieve a more youthful appearance. Focus on what you can control and make the most of it.
