Alcohol has lots of calories but little nutrition, known as empty calories. For example, a bottle of wine has about 605 calories. Plus, too much alcohol can indirectly affect weight gain in these ways:

  1. Many people skip exercise after heavy drinking, making them less active for up to 2 days.

  2. Bad food choices are made while drinking.

  3. Poor sleep quality can increase appetite, cravings for unhealthy food, and lower energy burned.

  4. Alcohol slows down your body’s functions and nervous system, leading to health problems and weight gain.

    • Alcohol contains seven calories per gram.

    • For example, a glass of wine (125ml/119.6g/ 12% alcohol): 100.1 Kcal (119.6 x 0.12= 14.3g of alcohol, 14.3 x 7 Kcal=100.1 Kcal)
